Determining Your Skin Type
QUESTION: How can I determine which foundation formula is best for my skin?
The first step to finding the correct foundation shade is to determine your skin type. Foundation formulas provide different results based on skin types.
Normal Skin Type:
Oily Skin Type:
Combination Skin Type:
Dry/Mature Skin Type:
QUESTION: I have oily skin, would the Creme De La Creme Foundation and Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation make my skin more oily and aggravate my acne? Would the True Essence Oil Free Mousse be best for me?
Oily skin may be caused by a hormonal imbalance causing the sebaceous glands to produce an excessive amount of sebum. It is therefore highly recommended that customers utilize a good skin care regimen when using any cosmetic to reduce accumulation of oil on the skin. The Creme De La Creme Foundation and Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation are formulated with non-comedogenic ingredients making it ideal for those with problematic skin types. Our True Essence Oil Free Mousse Foundation is created with herbal extracts renowned for their astringent and toning properties that are useful for combating oily skin. Mineral Indulgence cosmetics are naturally created to reduce the appearance of oil and mattify the skin, however, customers with excessively oily skin are advised to use the following skin care products for best results when wearing our cosmetics.
Tea Tree Citrus Cleansing Tea
Matamorphosis Skin Mattifier
Deep Clean Cleansing Cream
Multani Mitti Cleansing Masque
Set It Off Oil Control Powder
QUESTION: I have combination skin with dark marks on my forehead and cheeks from acne. Which foundation formulas would be best for my particular skin care issue and how do I prevent oil in my T-zone without drying out the rest of my face?
Many customers with combination skin and skin discoloration use the Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation to provide their skin with a more even complexion and address the needs of their combination (oily and dry) skin type. Natural Finish Powder Foundation is a mattifiying powder that is also capable of controling oil in the T-zone without drying out the rest of the skin or accentuating laugh lines or wrinkles. Natural Finish Powder Foundation is most compatible to combination skin types when used with the Dynamic Duo Cream Foundation for maximum coverage. Our Creme De La Creme Foundation and Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation are our most pigmented foundation formulas providing moderate to maximum coverage. Coverage options depend on methods of application. Because the Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation contains two different foundation shades of the customer's choice to address various issues, this product is considered ideal for combination skin types. Our Creme De La Creme Foundation and Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation are capable of providing moderate, yet buildable coverage if applied with a makeup pad or sponge. For heavy coverage we would advise that customers use clean finger tips to liberally apply the foundation directly to their skin, while smoothing and blending with fingers tips. Follow up with the Natural Finish Powder Foundation for a natural yet polished appearance. To achieve the best results with our cosmetics, customers with combination skin are advised to use the following skin care products:
Hibiscus & Fig Cleansing Cream
Tea Tree Citrus Cleansing Tea
Oil Free Moisturizer
Mineral Indulgence Foundation Primer
Dry Skin Therapy Firming Masque
QUESTION: Why is it recommended to use fingers to apply the Creme De La Creme Foundation and Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation to oily/combination skin instead of makeup pads or a foundation brush?
Makeup pads are used to smooth and blend foundation, however, sponges and makeup pads also harbor oil, debris, and bacteria that can cause a problem for acne prone skin types and clog pores. It is also important to understand that Mineral Indulgence foundation formulas were specially formulated to acclimate to skin when applied with finger tips for maximum coverage. Due to the fact that makeup pads and sponges absorb most of the foundation when they are used for application, the use of a makeup pad with our Creme De La Creme Foundation, Liquid Silk Foundation, True Essence Oil Free Mousse Foundation, or Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation will provide medium coverage. Maximum coverage can only be achieved by using your finger tips to apply our natural foundations. Loose powders such as the Natural Finish Powder Foundation and Set It Off Powder should be applied with a kabuki style application brush.
QUESTION: I am interested in using your foundations but I have dry patches of skin on my face. Will the Natural Finish Powder Foundation and Creme De La Creme Foundation make my dry patches go away?
Dry skin can be caused by dehydration, use of chemical based cosmetics, aging, health conditions, or the use of certain medications. For this reason, it is very important to know the source of your dry skin issues as well as using a skin care regimen designed to address your needs. Dry skin patches are areas of dead "raised" skin that should be exfoliated prior to the use of any cosmetic. Because dry skin is, in fact, skin that is "raised" from it's surface, it must be exfoliated before applying makeup products for best results. We would recommend the following skin care regimen for dry skin types:
Hibiscus & Fig Cleansing Cream
Evening Primrose Moisture Milk or Oil Free Moisturizer (depending on the severity of skin dryness)
Chocolate Gelato Conditioning Masque
Mineral Indulgence Foundation Primer
QUESTION: I have dry skin patches on my face and I am having a hard time finding a skin care product to slough off the dead skin while also keeping my skin moisturized. Most exfoliating products are designed for oily skin and are too harsh and drying for my skin type, what product can I use to exfoliate and remove the flaky skin patches while also keeping my skin conditioned so that my makeup looks better on my skin?
Many exfoliating skin care products are created to address the needs of oily skin, however a simple recipe that includes natural ingredients can effectively help to remove dry skin. To exfoliate flaky patches of dry skin for better application of our cosmetics, we would recommend the following at home recipe:
Dry Skin Exfoliation Masque:
2 tbsp of colloidal oatmeal
2 tsp of olive oil
2 tbsp of plain yogurt
1 tsp honey
1 tbsp of granulated sugar
a small amount of ripe avocado (optional)
Blend all ingredients together, and apply directly to dampened skin. Scrub gently in small circular motions. Leave on skin for 15 minutes and rinse. Follow up with a Mineral Indulgence moisturizer. Apply a layer of Creme De La Creme Foundation and Natural Finish Powder Foundation in any shade of your choice.
Finding The Correct Foundation Formula
Mineral Indulgence offers customers five different foundation formulas within twenty different foundation shades. This means that we offer one hundred options of foundations for women of color to choose from! Each foundation formula is created to address the needs of specific skin types as well as provide a certain level of coverage. The following Mineral Indulgence foundation formulas are listed from the most maximum coverage to the lightest coverage numerically from 1-5.
QUESTION: I have used Iman Cosmetics and several other cosmetic brands in the past and have noticed that sometimes I am one shade in their company's powder foundation but another shade in their liquid and cream foundation formulas. Is there a possibility that I could be two different shades in your cosmetics depending on what foundation formulas I use?
Typically most Mineral Indulgence customers are able to wear the same shade in all of our foundation formulas. However, as is the case with any foundation manufactured by a cosmetic company, it is possible to be a particular shade in one Mineral Indulgence foundation formula and a different shade in another Mineral Indulgence foundation formula. This is due to the fact that the concentration of pigments used in our cream and powder foundations is higher. A higher concentration of pigments causes our cream foundations to distribute differently on the skin than our liquid and mousse foundations. Also, while most of our customers are capable of using the same shade in all Mineral Indulgence foundation formulas, some users may notice a slight difference based on their skin type. This issue may be most common specifically in the use of our True Essence Oil Free Mousse Foundation and Liquid Silk Foundation, as these formulations contain an aqueous infusion of pigments and natural botanicals that were created to provide a more sheer coverage. We would advise that customers utilize the foundation tips found on our website to find the correct foundation match in different Mineral Indulgence foundation formulas.
QUESTION: My computer monitor at home does not reflect the makeup shades on your site the same as it does at work. How can I be sure that I am selecting the correct shade?
Mineral Indulgence is proud to offer the largest selection of mineral makeup for women of color. We are truly dedicated to assisting women of color in finding the correct foundation(s) to address their skin care needs. We provide images of women depicting each cosmetic shade, foundation swatches divided by undertone as well as hue, and sample options that are preset to include all five foundations within a certain skin tone category. These options ensure that most of our customers can successfully find a shade that matches their skin tone.
QUESTION: How do I know what my undertone is and are the foundation swatches on the website listed in order from light to dark or solely by under tone?
Mineral Indulgence foundation shades are divided into two different categories based on under tone. The two categories are: "Warm To Neutral" and "Cool To Neutral". There are ten shades listed in the "Warm To Neutral" category. Shades listed in this category will have either a yellow/golden, neutral/olive, or red/orange undertone. There are also ten shades in the "Cool To Neutral" category. Shades listed in this category will have either a pink, red/burgundy, neutral, or red/blue undertone. Within each "Warm To Neutral" and "Cool To Neutral" category are five shades categorized by skin tone. "Fair To Light" shades are shades that vary from the fairest to lightest within it's under tone category. "Medium To Dark" shades are shades that vary from medium browns to very dark browns within their under tone category. It is very important to understand that the foundation shades listed on our website are NOT necessarily listed in order from lightest to darkest based on your complexion. They are however, listed from lightest to darkest within each skin tone category and each under tone category. For example, when you look at our foundation swatches, the shade Espresso is the darkest Mineral Indulgence foundation shade within the "Warm To Neutral" category. This however, does not mean that it is darker than the shade Mahogany or Ebony which are in the "Cool To Neutral" category . Mahogany and Ebony have more of a red/burgundy and red/blue under tone and are therefore in a different category than Espresso. Another example would be that our foundation in the shade Cream is the lightest foundation shade in the "Warm To Neutral" category however it is not necessarily "lighter" than Hazelnut. The shade Hazelnut simply has a different (more pink/red) under tone. The best way to select a shade, would be to first determine what your skin's under tone is based on the two categories which are "Warm To Neutral and "Cool To Neutral". After you have determined what your under tone is, choose a category that best represents your skin tone (complexion) which range from Fair to Darkest with variances in between the two. Finally, select a shade within that category that best matches your complexion.
*Use the following steps to find your shade:
1. Determine under tone category ("Warm To Neutral" or "Cool To Neutral")
2. Determine skin tone category ("Fair To Light" or "Medium to Dark")
3. Select a shade that best matches your complexion.
4. View model image found on foundation swatches depicting each shade as well as shade descriptions. (optional)
5. Order a sample kit that includes a shade of your interest or place an order for your desired shade.
QUESTION: Is there a way that I can find out which shades are for lighter complexions and which shades are for darker complexions?
For customers who have difficulty determining which foundation could be a possible match, all of our foundations are divided into six different sample kit categories based on skin tone (complexion) which can be found on our Mineral Cosmetic Samples page. Customers who consider themselves to have a fair complexion should purchase the Fair To Light Sample Shade Collection which includes all of our most fair foundation shades. For customers who consider themselves to have a very light or "tan" complexion, we would recommend the Light Shade Collection. Customers who believe they have a light complexion or light brown "golden" skin tone should purchase the Light To Medium Shade Collection. For those who are a medium brown or a "brown skin" shade we would recommend the Medium To Dark Collection which includes all of our brown foundation shades. The Dark Shade Collection includes all foundation shades for customers that consider themselves to have a darker skin tone, while our Darkest Shade Collection includes our darkest foundation shades for customers who have a very deep brown complexion. It is not necessary to select a sample kit based on your skin's under tone since your sample kit will include all of our shades that are within the range of your complexion. You would simply need to determine your skin tone (ie: light skin, fair skin, dark skin, etc).
QUESTION: I am a dark skinned woman and wear MAC cosmetics shade NW50 in their pressed powder. What shade would you recommend for my skin tone?
Due to the fact that Mineral Indulgence cosmetics are created with natural ingredients and natural colorants, our foundation shades may not be the same as other companies that use artificial ingredients and colorants to create their shades. We often receive inquires requesting shade assistance from customers who have previously used different cosmetic brands. Since foundation shades may differ from all cosmetic companies, It is very important that customers clearly describe their skin tone in great detail in order to receive an accurate shade recommendation from our staff. Due to the fact that we cannot see the faces of our customers as well as prospective buyers, in order to receive a more precise shade recommendation, we would need detailed information describing your complexion. The information that is provided by customers is our sole determinant in recommending a possible foundation match. Simply providing us with the shade name that you wear in another cosmetic brand is not sufficient information for a shade analysis. Everything from your skin's under tone, to your complexion, the foundation formula, your skin condition and type can play a major role in determining what foundation shade would best match your complexion. For example, many of our customers who have previously used the shade MAC NW50 wear the Mineral Indulgence shade Espresso in our Natural Finish Powder Foundation. However, other customers who have used MAC NW50 blended with MAC NW47 to create a more accurate shade, have found the Mineral Indulgence shade Chestnut to be a perfect match. Please keep in mind that Mineral Indulgence cosmetics are created with natural ingredients therefore our shades may differ from other product lines that are not natural.
QUESTION: How do I use your Match Maker Shade Chart?
Our Match Maker Shade Chart is intended to be used as a reference guide for customers who are currently using another cosmetic brand. The shade matches listed on our chart are based on information provided by customers who have used other brands in the past and are currently using a Mineral Indulgence foundation. Since some of our customers may have been using two different foundation shades in other brands to address their needs, please keep in mind that the information that they provided is based off of their own circumstances. This also applies to customers who may have had other issues related to their unique skin tone. For this reason, we cannot guarantee that the information provided on our shade chart will pertain to all users. While our Match Maker Shade Chart is designed to provide a suggestion as to what shades may be a possible match to a brand that you have used in the past, we would HIGHLY recommend that customers use the detailed descriptions, images, and sample options provided on our website to find their correct foundation shade. Foundation samples are divided into six easy to use categories based on skin tone (complexion). Each skin tone category contains five different foundation samples. Within each skin tone sample category are all of the foundation shades that match that skin tone. For example, the "Medium To Dark" Sample Collection category includes all foundation samples for customers that are considered to have a medium brown to dark complexion. If however, you wear NW50 in MAC cosmetics (which is one of MAC's darkest shades) and consider yourself a darker skinned woman, we would advise that you purchase samples in our "Darkest"Sample Collection as this collection encompasses all of our darkest foundation shades.
QUESTION: After reviewing your Match Maker Shade Chart and all of your foundation swatches, I think I have found a shade that would match my complexion. I do not want to purchase a sample kit. Is there any other way that you can assist me in making sure that I am choosing the right Mineral Indulgence foundation shade?
Customers who prefer to place an order for full sized cosmetics without first purchasing a sample kit, may request a shade analysis from our staff by submitting the following information to our customer service department:
1: A complete description of your complexion.
2: A complete description of your under tone (ie: red, neutral, yellow, etc)
3: Provide us with the name of a possible celebrity or well known person who you believe may best represent your complexion.
4: Provide at least three up close images (front, right side, left side profile) of yourself in day light lighting that truly represent your complexion.
5. Include details regarding foundation shades and brands that you previously used in the past .
6. Give information regarding which Mineral Indulgence foundation shades you believe may be a match to your complexion (after viewing our shade descriptions and the images of models on our website).
7. Give a description of your skin tone (ie: Do you consider yourself to be a medium brown complexion, darker skin, etc?)
8. List your current skin condition (oily, acne, combination, etc).
9. Mention the desired foundation coverage results you wish to achieve.
10.Indicate any previous issues with past foundation/cosmetic brands.
Please note the following: Customers who provide vague information that is not detailed enough or images that are obscured by a flash or "cast" will be referred back to our Mineral Cosmetic Sample page or our Mineral Indulgence Cosmetic Guide FAQ page and advised to purchase a sample kit in a category that they feel best represents their complexion. Shade analysis assistance is a service granted to serious inquires only as well as customers who are interested in purchasing our full sized cosmetics. We do not provide shade analysis for sample kit orders.
Examples of how to submit a shade selection inquiry is shown below.
(Inaccurate) Shade Selection Assistance Inquiry: I wear the shade NC50 in MAC cosmetics and have oily skin. What shade would I wear in your cosmetics?
(Accurate) Shade Selection Assistance Inquiry: I am a woman of color with a medium brown to dark skinned complexion. My undertone is mostly neutral but with slight yellow undertones in some areas. I believe my complexion is similar to that of actress Tichina Arnold, Gabrielle Union, Angela Bassett, or First Lady Michelle Obama. I have a unique complexion which makes it difficult to find the correct shade for my skin tone due to the fact that some areas are red while other areas are more yellow. I am discolored due to previous issues with acne and have combination skin and a few blemishes that I would like to conceal. I am looking to narrow down what foundation shade would be best for me. I believe that I am in the "Medium To Dark" Shade Collection category on your website with possible shade matches being Mocha, Cocoa, or Toffee. I would like medium to maximum coverage and have used NC50 in MAC cosmetics (pressed powder) which was a good match but not perfect. Conventional foundations (MAC, Fashion Fair etc) generally oxidize on my oily skin or break me out. I am looking for a more natural alternative with full, maximum coverage.
Mineral Indulgence Recommendation: Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation in shades Mocha and Cocoa. Cocoa Natural Finish Powder Foundation.
QUESTION: I have received my foundation sample order. What is the best way to determine which shade is the appropriate match?
Mineral Indulgence Foundation Sample Kits contain enough foundation for one to two applications. To determine the correct foundation shade, make sure that your face is clean. Apply a small amount of your sample to your jaw line and blend the remaining foundation over your entire face. If you are sampling the Natural Finish Powder Foundation be sure to apply the samples with the mini kabuki application brush that is included in your order. For best results, apply all cream and liquid foundations with finger tips. Natural Finish Powder Foundation should only be applied with the included brush or a powder brush. Do not apply powder foundation with finger tips or makeup pads. After applying the foundation, view your face in natural day light lighting. Determine if you are satisfied with the coverage as well as the shade and the under tone. For customers who have purchased multiple sample kits (Creme De La Creme Foundation Sample Kit along with the Natural Finish Powder Sample Kit, etc) apply the cream foundations prior to applying the powder foundations to determine an accurate shade match. Those who have discoloration or a unique skin tone may also mix the Creme De La Creme Foundation sample shades to create a customized shade. Remember, Mineral Indulgence offers do-it-yourself shade customization and concealer options with our Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation. Due to the fact that both the Creme De La Creme Foundation and Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation are both cream foundation formulas, samples of the Creme De La Creme Foundation will allow customers the option of knowing which shade blends can address all of their skin care needs if they decide to purchase the Dynamic Duo foundation option in the future.
QUESTION: I have been wearing the shade Mocha in your Creme De La Creme Foundation and Natural Finish Powder Foundation for years, but I have noticed that the foundations appear to be darker on my skin in the winter but a perfect match for my skin tone for the rest of the year (fall, spring, and summer). Can a persons' complexion change during the season?
Many women of color appear one shade lighter in the winter, due to the fact that they are least likely to have as much sun exposure during that time of the year. For customers who experience this issue, we would recommend they purchase the Dynamic Duo Cream To Powder Foundation and choose to have one side of the foundation compact in a shade that matches their complexion during the winter months (when their skin appears lighter) and the other side of the foundation compact in a shade that represents their complexion for the majority of the year. This will allow customers the option of blending and mixing so their foundation consistently matches their complexion as well as the option of using the lighter shade as a concealer when their complexion has returned back to it's regular hue.
QUESTION: I received my Natural Finish Powder Foundation and swatched it on my arm with my makeup pad and found it to streak. Is there something I did wrong?
Mineral Indulgence Natural Finish Powder Foundation is a loose mineral foundation created from crushed minerals and natural botanicals. Our foundation does not contain bismuth oxychloride, mica, talc, synthetic colorants or artificial additives. Due to the fact that our products do not contain synthetic additives that most conventional cosmetic companies use to cause their product ingredients to bind and adhere to the skin, all of our loose mineral powder foundations must be applied with a kabuki style application brush which allows proper distribution on the skins surface. When loose mineral powder is applied to the skin with finger tips or makeup pads, it can cause a smear or streak affect which may also cause the applied minerals to appear darker. For best results, Natural Finish Powder Foundation should be buffed onto the skin with the proper application brush.
QUESTION: How do I get full coverage with the Creme De La Creme Foundation and Natural Finish Powder Foundation?
The Creme De La Creme Foundation should be applied to clean dry skin with finger tips and blended for full coverage. We do not recommend application with makeup pads, sponges nor foundation brushes. These tools absorb the majority of the foundation thus preventing adequate coverage and causing the pigments to clump and possibly streak. Mineral Indulgence foundations offer buildable coverage while retaining a light weight feeling, therefore the more foundation applied, the fuller the coverage will be.
Mineral Indulgence is a natural brand of mineral cosmetics created specifically to address the needs of women of color. Offering a diverse selection of foundation shades ranging from Cream to Ebony, five different natural foundation formulas, and over 250 mineral cosmetics in total, Mineral Indulgence is proud to be the largest manufacturer of mineral cosmetics for women of color in the world. We offer do-it-yourself shade customization as well as serecite mica free foundation options that help to provide naturally beautiful coverage that ranges from sheer to maximum.

General Mineral Indulgence Product FAQ
QUESTION: Does your foundation aggravate acne prone skin types?

QUESTION: I purchased samples of your cosmetics in both the Liquid Silk Foundation formula and Creme De La Creme Foundation formula and noticed that the Creme De La Creme Foundation shade "Caramel" was a perfect match while the Liquid Silk Foundation formula in the same shade was slightly more red. Is this normal?
As is the case for most cosmetic brands, pigmentation in foundation formulas may vary within one shade. The Dynamic Duo Cream to Powder Foundation and Creme De La Creme Foundation are the most highly pigmented of all the Mineral Indulgence foundation formulas while the Natural Finish Powder Foundation is our most lightly pigmented foundation formula. Most customers who wear one shade in one foundation formula will wear the same foundation shade in another foundation formula, however due to issues such as hyperpigmentation, or blemishes it is possible for a person to wear for example, Mocha in our Creme De La Creme Foundation, but wear Cocoa in our Natural Finish Powder Foundation. For this reason, we highly suggest that customers purchase sample kits of each foundation formula that they may have interest in later purchasing in full size. This may be necessary so that they can find the appropriate foundation formula as well as the foundation pigmentation best suited to address their needs. Please see "STEP 2: Finding The Correct Foundation Formula" for more details above.

QUESTION: I am not familiar with applying mineral based eyeshadows, however, I love your colors. How would you recommend I apply your eyeshadow colors for best results?
Mineral Indulgence offers highly pigmented loose mineral eyeshadows. Mineral eye shadows should be applied over an eyeshadow base for day long coverage. Our eye shadows can also be applied slightly damp over an eye shadow base for a more pigmented result. This will also prevent "fall out" that naturally occurs when using mineral based eye shadows. Simply dampen your eyeshadow brush or finger tip just enough to slightly dampen the minerals and apply to the eye area.
We recommend three eyeshadow shades for a complete look. Apply a more neutral color to the "mobile lid" portion of the eye and the darkest shade in the "crease" of the eye as well as slightly along the "lash line". The lightest or "highlight" shade should be applied below the eyebrow. This same shade can also be applied in the "inner corner" of the eye if desired. Shades should be blended well for a naturally beautiful appearance. Please see eye diagram to the left as a guide to determine where to apply Mineral Indulgence Eye Shadow shades.
A. Mobile Lid - Apply a neutral shade (ie: Brown Sugar or Birch)
C. Crease/contour - Use the darkest eye shadow shade and apply it to the crease of your eye and slightly along the lash line (ie: Matte Brown, Matte Grey, Matte Blue, etc)
E. Apply the lightest shade or "highlight" shade below the eyebrow (ie: Diamonds, Vanilla, Golden, Soft Peach Hilight, Nectar, etc)
B. Apply lightest "highlight" shade in the inner corner of eye if desired.
QUESTION: What is the difference between your lipsticks, liquisticks, and lipglazes?
Mineral Indulgence lipsticks offer matte coverage with no shine. Our lipsticks are created from creamy formulas of shea butter and olive oil and are highly pigmented with ranges from sheer to full coverage depending on shade. Our liquisticks provide the creamy, moisturizing sensation of a lipstick combined with the shine of a lip gloss. Mineral Indulgence lipglazes are glossy and moisturizing with a more sheer yet high shine coverage.
